“Become a Champion in life, by conquering the enemy within.” – Grand Master Kwon (ISA Founder)
SELF DEFENSE & CONFIDENCE- Children who participate in Tae Kwon Do will be taught to physically defend themselves, if needed. However, it is taught, first and foremost to think through the situation before engaging in a physical altercation, or high-risk situation. Our students learn the skill of Conflict Resolution, and gain the necessary confidence to stand up for themselves and push back when needed.
FOCUS, STILLNESS, & PATIENCE- These days, children live in a world filled with technology, noise, and instant gratification. Tae Kwon Do, gives students a unique form of physical release, which not only grants our students a better nights rest, but also, enhances the brains ability to focus. Each movement the child learns requires exact precision and must be carried out with deep focus, in order to achieve unwavering precision. These teachings, also help to increase hand-eye coordination. Tae Kwon Do students are also taught breathing techniques, and how to channel their inner power or Chi. Tae Kwon do allows students to find the silence and stillness within. When students are able to find this, it is then that they are able to tap into their life force and locate, confront, and eventually overcome emotion. At the basis of Tae Kwon Do theory, is the idea that we are each our own enemy, and overcoming ourselves, and our emotion is the key to individual success.
RESPECT & SELF CONTROL- As a child learns to conquer their own emotions, they will also develop a deep respect for others, and themselves. Tae Kwon Do students are required to show their instructors unflinching respect. Instructors will not tolerate poor behavior, and expect their students to display respect to others, the Dojo, the lesson, and of course, themselves. As a sign of respect and readiness to learn, the students are expected to bow. The culture of respect is maintained at all times.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH & MOTOR SKILLS- Speed, balance, agility, flexibility, strength and coordination are all practiced and developed during Tae Kwon Do classes, as it requires exact execution. Practice is essential! As the children grow, and learn they are also developing fine, and gross motor skills. They progress and in turn, become true martial artists with healthy bodies.
SELF DISCIPLINE & PERSEVERANCE- Tae Kwon Do fosters absolute self-discipline. Children are accustomed to receiving praise simply for showing up. Tae Kwon Do requires students to put forth the effort, hard work, perseverance and self-restraint, in order to succeed. Students’ progress solely on their own merits. Age is not a factor. Ability is not a factor. Young children are given the opportunity, and the foundation to progress at the same rate as an adult student, should they be willing to work hard.
LIFE LESSONS & ACHIEVING GOALS- As stated above, Tae Kwon Do students’ progress on their own merit. Tae Kwon Do requires self-discipline, and perseverance to achieve individual goals. As children advance through the belt system, they are continually setting short term goals they MUST achieve on their own, at their own pace, and work toward bigger goals over long periods of time. These moments of success cannot be experienced in team sports. The individual success can only be achieved if the child works hard. Children will learn that life throws punches at you; whether it be a literal punch, a failed test, or a situational set back. Tae Kwon Do teaches them to ALWAYS get back up. Our students will learn early on that it’s not about the number of times you fall, but the number of times you get back off.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES & EQUALITY- Children who participate in Tae Kwon Do spend less time in front of a screen. Most children who struggle to enjoy physical activity may often find Tae Kwon Do enjoyable, as no one ever sits on the bench, or is left out. Everyone participates equally, and are not restricted based on gender, age, or ability. Male and female students are able to compete against each other equally, and will not be discriminated against. Children who are less physical are able to participate and will not be forced to rely on more physical team mates for a “Win.” Because, Tae Kwon Do allows students to progress on their own, children who are less physical will have the opportunity to have more moments of success, and achieving goals. Unfortunately, in our country childhood obesity is at an all-time high. Tae Kwon Do can combat this, by allowing children to participate year round, in any weather, and several times a week. Tae Kwon Do engages all muscle groups, with limited break time, to keep the body constantly moving.
SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT- Tae Kwon Do brings children together who have a common interest, and a common moral ground. Children who face difficulty in social situations are given a unique opportunity to learn and practice skills that will better aid them in communication and building confidence. Students are able to help one another to achieve their own individual goals. Sparring, and some maneuvers require teamwork, allowing children to help one another. During class, children participate in discussions that teach them the importance of leadership, accountability, honesty, communication, responsibility, and teamwork.
COGNITIVE & EXECUTIVE FUNCTION DEVELOPMENT- Executive functions are the cognitive abilities to control our thoughts, actions and emotions. Executive function takes place in the frontal cortex of the brain. Skills that can be affected if there were to be an issue in the EF part of the brain, are impulse control, emotional control, flexibility, adaptability, memory, self-monitoring, planning, task initiation, and organization. Various activities appear to improve children’s EF. Martial arts show strong evidence of improving the executive functions in the brain. EFs are critical for school, job success, mental and physical health. Tae Kwon Do allows these skills to be progressively challenged, practiced and achieved.
